Artist's Statement about this work
Last fall in Capitol Reef I started this en plein air but was unable to finish on location. I finished it later in my studio. It was late afternoon, with the sun rapidly setting, and I was enamored with the textures and shadows, particularly the shadows from the rock formations on the right, cast on the escarpment on the left. I also had never seen water pockets so huge, as big as a bathtub--they looked like something from another planet. The landscape of Capitol Reef never ceases to delight and inspire, and this time I was beckoned off the Grand Wash and down a sandy trail that completely swept me away!
